CB Radios-A New way of communication

CB Radio (often known as Citizens Band) is a two way radio which is used for personal communication in order to transmit and receive radio signals only within a designated band of frequencies. Firstly it was introduced in the market in 1940. At that time it is used for short distance communication and only one channel was available.

In the late 1960's, it became a popular tool for trade business like carpenters, plumbers, truckers and radio hobbyists. CB radios are favorites with truckers to communicate location of service stations, police speed traps etc... It is also used by businesses and homeowners, especially in remote areas where cell and internet service are not readily available. CB radios are available as hand held units, mobile units and base station units. CB radios offer 40 channels of communications. SSB (Single Side Band) radios are also available with an additional 80 channels, but are usually more expensive.

CB radio frequencies are allocated and regulated by the FCC (Federal Communication Commission). No license is required to operate a CB radio. The maximum RF output allowed by law is 4 Watts. A few things to consider before purchasing a CB Radio:
  • You should check the features of the radio and how you plan on using it. Quality of reception and transmission depends on the antenna and microphone.
  • You should make sure that the antenna is a CB antenna and correctly tuned.
  • CB radios come with warranties ranging from one to three years depending on the manufacturer. Extended warranties are available for purchase.
